The ishlab Gazette
What's Up With That ish??
It’s funny how time flies, right? It turns out it’s been two whole year’s since I’ve written any kind of official update on what’s been going on with ishlab. Rather than beat myself up and bemoan the fact …I’m going to focus on the bright side, which is that we’ve/I’ve been SO BUSY. Incredibly so, and as a result I’ve been incredibly grateful and amped about what’s next. A lot of you played a big role in making our goals a reality since 2000, so look out for a personal shout. And don’t sleep, cuz we’ll still be leaning on you (and supporting you back) when you see what we have lined up for 2009. Peace, xoj, bohboh, light and all that good stuff. J
ishlab Studio Upgrades
We have to keep the studio gear fresh. The pockets took a hurting, but some of our new equipment includes: T- amps, mics, pre amps like the charter ok microphone, vintek preamp, fender amplifiers, surround sound controller and speaker setup, cbs compressor, chandler pre-amp, altiverb plugin, uad cards, guitars, and roland space echo. We also expanded the live room and acoustic treatment. More fiyah!
On the Studio Music Side
Eli’s been working hard in the studio on some amazing projects with Jet, Melissa auf der Maur, Atara Valentine, Nicole Adkins. The Five O'Clock Heroes returned to ishlab to mix their new CD with Eli, and Jet recently reunited with Eli to demo some new material for their third album. Also noteworthy is his work with Stephen Fretwell's album "Man On The Roof" which entered the UK album charts at number 44. The big single "Now" comes out the first week of January 2008, come on number 1!!
Newest Clients
The heart and soul of ishlab, and the talent keeps growing. I’m talking about M.I.A. (studio client for her Paper Planes remix), Hess is More (studio client), KUDU(studio client), Betty Black, Jet(studio client), Dead Prez, Jesse Boykins III, DJ Sasha. Hooooooooooot.
Our Artists @ ishlab
Look out for our Quarterly Parties!
As for my personal production work, between Emanuel and the Fear, Betty Black , plus Leo Coltrane – the inspiration I’ve been experiencing is unreal. Most of you are familiar with them, or have been to a recent event (we thank you!), but in case you’re not up on them, in brief:
Emanuel and the Fear – think: a grand fusion of horns, pop piano, lulling vocals, violin strains and hand claps. The album release party was not only sold out – but with the right people making it such a beautiful night. Check out the roster section of the site, the press has been really positive, and we are taking it to the next level in 2009 (and moving Emanuel out of the studio).
Betty Black – my “Southern Creole Elvira” - her voice has the depth and the innocence of a girl finding her footing as a woman. In her lyrics are the vivid and sad tales of love and lust. Her alter, or original ego, Sylvia is the frontwoman of KUDU – writing a co-producing alongside Deantoni Parks. Crazy hot.
Leo Coltrane – Love lost and found, lust and pain, appreciation and apologies, his music moves you. We’ve had a lot of fun pulling this project together, with the result a musically rich mix of hip hop layered with lives instruments and intricate harmonies.
I’ve also been remixing tracks by KUDU, and the infamous Eurythmics and Marvin Gaye...coming soon.
Licensing News
Quick shout to Lyn Devon, who I had the pleasure to put the music together for her fashion show. Love her designs, check it http://www.lyndevon.com/. Other noteworthy collaborations we’ve put together with Hearst Publications and Cirque du Soleil and ESPN, plus indie films like Lost Box and Mundo Films’ new documentary.
Clothing
In Spring 2009, we did a soft launch of ishlab gear: t-shirts, tank tops and hoodies for the ladies and the fellas.
And coming soon to your TV screen…
We’ve got an amazing project in the works with none other than the illustrious Peter Rieveschl (details coming… but it’s all about music, culture, process and reciprocity).
Project RHYThM
Shireen Idroos and I have been focusing big time on a project that we’ve been talking about for years. This past summer, we started working with Camp Amerikids (love these people running it and the kids!) I spent 2 weeks up at the camp in upstate NY to start the music production part of camp - sooo fun! www.campamerikids.com
Lead to a year-round project that we’re working both on-site and at ishlab, and we are now working on a documentary. Check out http://www.campamerikids.org/ to learn more about this important organization.
